CURIOUS VICTORIAN MAGIC LANTERN SHOW
10 November, 7pm
Walpole Bay Hotel, Fifth Avenue, Cliftonville
Sights, frights, natural wonders, moral warnings and extraordinary mechanical moving pictures from the age before cinema, bought vividly to life with the aid of a stirring showman's commentary.
'Professor' Heard travels all over the world exhibiting his remarkable and rare collection of hand-painted and photographic magic lantern slides, originally designed for the amusement and instruction of Victorian and Edwardian audiences.
This special show for Margate features some of the most curious examples including a rare rendition of the classic Victorian Ingoldsby Legend Misadventures at Margate using the original hand-painted slides. Has this been seen publicly in Margate in living memory? We think not.
Other optical surprises will include bearded ladies, alphabetical acrobats, prodigious pigs, baby juggling, weird feature film advertisements and other 'bizarre' pictorial delights.
Suitable for ages 7 and over.
Plus there’ll be an opportunity to pose your questions to the Professor and if you have any old magic lantern slides stored away, bring them in and you’ll be able to see them in their full glory!
Doors open 6:30pm. Interval bar.
All proceeds from the show will go to the Friends of the Shell Grotto. Tickets are free to pre-booked Friends of the Shell Grotto, £6.50 for non-members. Pre-booking is essential on 01843 220008. Or if you would like to buy tickets click on the Add to cart Button below.
