Halloween Hocus-Pocus at the Shell Grotto
After the success of our Halloween Tales event last year, the Friends have staged another night of magical entertainment for All Hallows’ Eve, with all profits going towards the Grotto conservation works.
The Great Misto, member of the famous Magic Circle, presented a mystical show in the magical depths of the Shell Grotto. Dressed in top hat and tails, and performing illusions that harkened back to the famous magicians of the early 1900s, he treated the audience to a host of bizarre and baffling effects.
In between shows, he also performed some truly perplexing close-up table magic in the café. Meanwhile, famed fortune teller Madame Anastasia offered Tarot readings to those brave and curious souls keen to see their future.
Trustee Gretchen Cornwall reports:
“There was something special in the air on Halloween. There was an ease in the atmosphere and I was genuinely impressed with the friendliness of those who came to support the Shell Grotto. The number of people in costume this year had increased and it was lovely to see children dressed as their favourite Halloween icon.
”The Great Misto was superb; he added great charm, fun and mystery to an evening long known for its enchantment.
”Enough cannot be said about the hard work behind the scenes and on the night, by Sarah Vickery, Colin Barber and their team of volunteers. Sarah was assisted behind the bar by Sue Andrews while our new Treasurer Claire Blackwell guarded the door with her protector Dracula Dave Collard. John Cornwall bravely sold raffle tickets and Annie read the cards for those who dared. The lovely Ron and Sue from Scotts Furniture Mart generously allowed us to borrow from their stock. Many thanks to them all.”
